Do you struggle with using fresh herbs? If so, you’re probably familiar with the situation where your two-day-old herbs have wilted and can’t be used in the recipe you had planned. This is especially common on these cold winter days…

Using fresh herbs before they spoil is a common problem, especially if you are cooking for just one or two people. But herbs are also a great addition to meals… So is there an easy solution?

We have the perfect solution: frozen herb cubes!

Learn how to make them and save time and money the next time you buy fresh herbs!

Remember that this works if you plan to use the herbs in warm dishes and not in cold ones, as the herbs will become soft and wilt.

What you’ll need:

Ice cube mould
Fresh herbs
Good quality olive oil
Zip lock bags

They’re so easy to make!

Chop up any fresh herbs you have.
Fill each section of the ice cube tray ¾ full with chopped herbs.
Add olive oil until the herbs are barely coated.
Freeze overnight, remove the cubes and store in labeled zipl lock bags for later use!

How long do the cubes last for?

Herbs frozen in oil have a long shelf life in the freezer – up to 12 months. Just remember to store them in tightly sealed zip lock bags so they don’t burn or lose their flavour in the freezer.

How to use frozen herb cubes?

The most intuitive way to use these is to put one in a pan and fry the vegetables in melted oil and herbs. However, you can also use frozen herb cubes in the following ways:

Let them melt in a bowl at room temperature and use the oil and herbs as a base for salad dressings.
Add them to cooked, still-warm quinoa or rice and toss to coat the grains in the tasty oil.
Melt the cube in a pan before cooking eggs in it.
Put it on top of soup for added flavour.

Happy cooking moments!
